Chapter Eleven
Lark
âYou stand in front of me, begging for another chance. Yet the one time I asked for more, you ran before you could leave me again.â
âNot Mineâ written by Lark Thornbird
I threw my hands in the air and belted out the next lyric, the mic in my hands and the music humming in my veins, as Bethany bumped me from the side, and we laughed.
âYou thought you were everything and yet you were never the one. I promised myself that I would be on the run. And youâre the one standing in front of me now, not kneeling, not groveling, doing nothing but shouting to the world. I was never yours and you were never mine. And youâll walk away, but Iâll always be on your mind.â
The rock music beneath the lyrics hummed, and we danced, shaking our heads and our asses at the same time, laughing at the bubbles of champagne in our system along with the lyrics.
This wasnât Bethanyâs bachelorette party, this was a party for just the two of us, as we sang karaoke on her back porch.
Everett stood in the doorway, laughing as he sipped his beer, and I knew that we were probably a little too much for him. But he was in love with Bethany, so he was going to have to deal with her best friend.
A few guests had walked by. They hadnât taken photos, but they had stopped, maybe to listen, maybe to be in awe of how ridiculous we were. So when one of them began clapping along, I hopped down from the porch and tilted the mic towards the other woman. She blinked at me with her wide eyes, before she sang along with the chorus, as if she wasnât just a stranger here for a night out with her significant other. The man at her side joined in, his bass adding the perfect blend to our voices.
Bethany clapped from the porch, dancing along with Everett as I sang with another guest, and then another.
By the end of the next song, we had a big crowd enjoying themselves, with only one person filming. Well, that was going to happen. They would put it on social media and then it would be another thing that people would talk about, but this was fun. And I was sharing music with strangers, something I did day in and day out. I didnât mind now. People would talk, because they always wanted to nitpick everything I did, and the same with Bethany.
But when the person put their phone in their pocket and grimaced, I shrugged and brought the mic to them. They sang along, their voice soft but sweet, and I kept moving, kept dancing along. The next song came on, and I handed the mic over to one of the guests and I leaned against the porch rail, grateful when Bethany handed me a sparkling water.
âBy the way, that guest with the camera told Everett that they werenât going to post it. That it was just for them.
